In Kenya AMURT has provided small business loans to over 1500 budding entrepreneurs (mainly single mothers) to help them and their dependents become economically self-sufficient. Most of the women were formerly struggling to survive on poorly paid and unreliable laboring jobs, but with training and guidance they have become proud small business owners. We are delighted with the success of the project over the past year, with 90% of the loans being repaid, and 78% of the women saving a portion of their profits.
The photo above shows Harima Okoth from the Thika slums who has started a successful drinking water vending business with AMURT’s help. As a result, she feels transformed: “Before AMURT I was a fool, now I am a perfect person. I stand proud. Even my body language has changed.”
